Microsoft Visual C++ is a utility that installs runtime components of Visual C++ libraries. These libraries are necessary to run programs developed in Visual C++. The libraries are provided as Service Pack 1 (SP1), for windows platform. Not having the SPI installed means that the programs developed in Visual C++ cannot execute on the host machine. SP1 is distributed for x86 architecture i.e., 32 bits. User can download Microsoft Visual C++ here. SP1 is a complete package that installs many libraries.
SP1 is also useful for development of code using Visual C++. However, tools that allows compiling and editing code, already come with an integrated runtime environment. This tool was released in 2008 and is a standard tool for downloading and installing required libraries.

What is MS Visual C++ SP1’s Features?

Runtime Components: MS Visual C++ 2008 SP1 can install necessary libraries and files that enable running Visual C++ code. A computer that does not have these necessary libraries cannot run code developed in MS Visual C++.
Component List: This package contains many libraries and components including C Runtime (CRT), Standard C++, ATL, MFC, OpenMP, and MSDIA libraries. It also installs libraries for side-by-side development support. CRT, SCL, ATL, MFC, and OpenMP are installed directly in the native assembly cache. The native assembly cache is also called as WinSxS. WinSxS is a folder within the Windows folder normally found in C drive of a windows-based system.
Registry Entries: The installer creates necessary registry entries while installing the SP1. This is useful for announcing to the system, what all is available as libraries.
Clean Install: The installation is clean and completes without errors. The system does advise not to shutdown to avoid any corruption. Furthermore, the system creates a recovery point prior to installation.
Secure Package: The package is secure and bears Microsoft’s commitment for developing secure content. The package does not install any malicious software including viruses, trojans, spyware, or malware.
Redistributable Package: The SP1 is a redistributable package and can be downloaded and stored in a memory stick drive. This can then be used to install on multiple machines. Not every machine requires an internet connection to download and install.

What is MS Visual C++’s limitations?

This utility package is old and the first service pack. Its limitation is that it is suitable for 32-bit architectures. 64-bit architectures run and install this as a 32-bit application. It is unable to utilize the power of 64-bit architectures.
