Plex Media Server is a free, downloadable media player for Windows based systems that uses Direct X 9.0c for better viewing experience. It can play many different types of files as well as stream media files from a device over a local network. This is suitable for home networks where media files are located over a network drive. Plex is available as basic and premium application, and it has no ads for the basic version. Users can pay for a Plex Pass, that increases the features. Increased features include DVR recording, file synchronization on mobile devices and coordination with cloud storage devices and the media player. The cloud can be used to store streamed data as well as playback the recorded media.
The new feature includes media streaming in addition to media playing. A Media center is provided for media management within Plex. The last major update was in April 2020, and PlexApp have updated their application a couple of times since 2021.

What are Plex’s features?

Advanced Features in Basic Version: Plex provides many advanced features in its free version thus making it very capable. The free version does nots how any ads or put-up annoying messages or roadblocks in the streaming process. While PlexApp encourages their users to purchase the premium version, if a user wishes to ignore, Plex App doesn’t place annoying popups. This makes viewing as a fun experience. 
Auto Scan: Plex can automatically scan the home system for media files and can also look for files and folders as desired by the user. The user can also create and add other folders manually.  
End to End Capability: For streaming over a local network, one needs Plex installed on both ends. Since it is a popular app, it can be used to stream over the Internet as well. 
Multi-Platform Support: Plex supports Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux as well as gaming consoles using Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast. Plex is not free for all platforms but free for Windows only.  
Quality Level in Streaming: When streaming over a noisy and weak Wi-Fi, Plex can reduce the quality to ensure better connectivity. The reduced quality works fine on unreliable and slow connections. 

What are Plex’s limitations?

A user can buy Plex App for much advanced features. These include DVR recording and linking cloud storage sites. Visual scanning is easier with cover arts but in default there are no cover arts. Added functionality including ID3 tags and properties of media file require more time to scan and display which makes the media center as a slower entity.
